Anastasia

A day later, the working council at Warren Sans Gloire was in its chamber near the underhall.

“You are a mighty hunter before the Lord,” said Anastasia, and licked Death Rage’s forehead. The mouse stood proudly with Anastasia’s saliva flattening the fur on her head. She had even taken off her Canada Dry bottlecap helmet for the occasion. “If I’m ever in trouble,” said Anastasia, “I want you by my side, stabbing coyotes as needed.”

“I will be there, Loving Auntie,” said Death Rage.

“I know you will,” said Anastasia, and there was a generous cheer from all present.

“Rawrr!” shouted Death Rage, showing her teeth and twirling her needle. The cheering devolved into some boisterous chaffing, and then died down.

“Now,” said Anastasia, “we’ve been attacked by a weasel, and we’ve been attacked by coyotes. The weasel we pushed back with the help of our heroes.” She looked around the room and touched noses with Grégoire, Holly, Wendy, and Coriander. “And Freddie,” she said.

“And Freddie,” echoed the others.

“But the coyotes ravaged us. Seven rabbits and five mice were Glorified that day.” There were some sniffles in the room, and then silence. “I blame myself,” said Anastasia. “I dithered when one thing is perfectly clear: we need more weapons.”

“Bah,” growled Wendy. “Why we need these toys? We have weapons here.” She tapped her teeth. “And here.” She tapped her skull.

Anastasia turned to her. “Your weapons are mighty,” she said, “and you didn’t even mention the burps.” There was a small chuckle. “If we had a thousand Wendies, no Blessed would dare to come near us. But alas, all we have is one. And ourselves.”

“Ya,” said Love Bug. “And some of us only have one tooth. If I had more to fight with, I’d use it. I’d give anything to have a Claw.” There was a general murmuring of assent.

“I’m with you, friend,” said Anastasia. “But so far, it seems like only one is on offer.”

Grégoire stepped forward. “What about your friend, Nicodemus? You speak of him often.”

“Probably too often,” said Anastasia.

“It sounds like he has skills. And he might be persuaded to bring some moneystones.”

“We’d be asking him to give up his secure position as Reader at the most successful warren in this area, and steal the rest of their moneystones besides,” said Anastasia. “That’s a hard ask for an elderly bunny.”

“Starting over is working for me,” said Grégoire, “and I’m old enough to be your grandsire.” There was a small chorus of cheers.

“I’m willing to ask,” said Anastasia. “The Blessed are throwing everything they have at us. We need to gather everything we can to protect ourselves.”

“What about the straightstone burrow?” asked Love Bug. “I’ve heard about it, but never been there.”

“Freddie is there now,” said Anastasia. “He sent me word that it looks promising. Of course, even with money from Nicodemus, we don’t have money to pay for raw elements there to be made into weapons. We’ll have to barter. And Bricabrac has his own loyalties.” She intended to smile, but it came out as a grimace.
